First Things First

Being referred to Fit to Train can feel worrying.

Many students initially assume they are in trouble or that their future profession is at risk.

In most cases, neither of these things is true.

A Fit to Train referral simply means that the University wishes to understand whether additional support, adjustments or planning may be required to help you participate safely and successfully in placement or professional training.

The process is intended to be supportive, not punitive.

Why Have I Been Referred?

You may have been referred because concerns have been raised about:

  • health or disability
  • Occupational Health recommendations
  • readiness for professional training
  • safety within a placement setting
  • pregnancy-related considerations
  • other factors affecting placement participation.

A referral does not automatically mean the concerns are correct.

The purpose of the process is to understand the situation fully and hear your perspective.

What Are My Rights?

You have the right to:

  • receive information about the concerns being considered
  • have time to prepare
  • attend the meeting
  • provide evidence
  • explain your circumstances
  • request reasonable adjustments
  • bring a supporter, adviser or Students' Union representative.

What Will the Panel Consider?

The panel will consider:

  • placement requirements
  • any health or wellbeing factors
  • Occupational Health advice
  • available support
  • possible reasonable adjustments
  • professional standards
  • safeguarding obligations
  • how risks can be managed safely.

The panel does not diagnose medical conditions and does not decide whether you are a good person or suitable person.

Its role is to consider readiness and safety within a professional training environment.

What Happens Afterwards?

You will receive a written outcome explaining:

  • the decision reached
  • the evidence considered
  • any adjustments or conditions
  • review arrangements
  • any right of appeal.

The aim is always to support safe progression wherever possible
