First Things First

Telling the University you are pregnant can feel daunting.

Many students worry that they will be treated differently, prevented from continuing their course or pressured into taking time away from their studies.

For most students, this is not what happens.

The purpose of the Pregnancy Support Process is to understand your circumstances and explore what support may help you continue your studies safely and successfully.

You Are Not In Trouble

Pregnancy Support is not:

  • disciplinary;
  • investigatory;
  • punitive.

You have done nothing wrong by becoming pregnant.

The University's role is to support you and ensure that any barriers to participation are addressed appropriately.

Will I Have to Take Time Out?

Not necessarily.

Pregnancy alone is not a reason to interrupt studies.

Many students continue studying throughout pregnancy.

Where difficulties arise, the University will explore support and adjustments before considering more restrictive options.

What About Placement?

Many students continue successfully on placement whilst pregnant.

If your placement involves additional risks or considerations, the University will work with you and the placement provider to identify safe and reasonable arrangements.

What Are My Rights?

You have the right to:

  • be treated fairly and respectfully;
  • participate in discussions;
  • receive clear information;
  • bring a supporter to meetings;
  • request reasonable adjustments;
  • receive written decisions;
  • appeal significant decisions affecting your studies.

After Birth

Support does not stop once your baby is born.

The University can work with you to:

  • plan your return;
  • review support needs;
  • consider ongoing adjustments;
  • support your transition back into study.

Support may continue for up to 52 weeks postpartum where required.
