You may be concerned about a friend, partner, housemate, colleague, or another student.

Signs that someone may need help can include:

  • becoming increasingly intoxicated;
  • frequent unexplained absences;
  • significant changes in mood or behaviour;
  • increasing isolation;
  • financial problems;
  • repeated blackouts or injuries;
  • substance use affecting study or placement;
  • using alone;
  • overdose;
  • expressing hopelessness or suicidal thoughts.

You do not need to diagnose them or confront them.

You can:

  • tell them what you have noticed;
  • listen without judging;
  • encourage them to seek professional help;
  • contact emergency services if they are seriously unwell;
  • contact Safeguarding if you believe they or somebody else may be at serious risk.
