Our Starting Position
The University's first preference is always to involve you in decisions about information sharing.
Whenever possible we will:
- Speak with you;
- Explain our concerns;
- Discuss support options;
- Seek your consent before sharing information.
If You Agree
If you consent, we will discuss:
- What information will be shared;
- Why it will be shared;
- Who it will be shared with;
- Whether the disclosure is a one-off conversation or part of ongoing support.
Only information that is necessary and proportionate will be shared.
If We Cannot Obtain Consent
Very occasionally, the University may decide that information needs to be shared without consent.
This will only occur where there is a reasonable belief that there is a risk of serious harm and disclosure is necessary to protect life or prevent serious injury.
Such decisions are made through safeguarding processes and require authorisation by appropriately trained senior staff.
What Information Would Be Shared?
The University will only share information necessary to address the identified risk.
For example, it may be sufficient to inform a Trusted Contact that:
"We have serious concerns about the student's wellbeing and would appreciate your support in helping us ensure they are safe."
The University will avoid sharing unnecessary personal information
