Supporting Safe Participation in Professional Training

Students on many University programmes undertake placements, clinical learning, professional practice, or training within regulated environments. These opportunities are an important part of preparing for a future profession.

Sometimes concerns arise about whether a student is currently able to participate safely and effectively in these environments. This may be because of health, disability, wellbeing, professional readiness, placement-related risks, safeguarding concerns, or other factors that require careful consideration.

The Fit to Train process provides a structured and supportive way for the University to consider these issues.

Fit to Train is:

✔ A supportive process

✔ A risk and readiness assessment process

✔ An opportunity to explore support and reasonable adjustments

✔ Focused on safe participation in training and placement

✔ Intended to prevent problems from escalating wherever possible

Fit to Train is not:

✘ A disciplinary process

✘ A punishment

✘ A finding that a student has done something wrong

✘ A Fitness to Practise investigation

The purpose of Fit to Train is to assess whether a student can participate safely and effectively in professional training environments, while balancing support, equality considerations, public protection and professional standards.
