One of the most important principles of digital safeguarding is:
The safest response is not always to disconnect.
Telling someone to “just delete the app”, “come off social media” or “block them” can sometimes sound simple, but it may not solve the problem.
For many people, online spaces are how they:
- communicate with family and friends;
- access University learning;
- keep in touch with support;
- manage banking;
- work;
- build relationships;
- participate in communities;
- access services.
Removing all of that can leave somebody more isolated, not safer.
Your current Digital Safety Plan captures this particularly well by beginning with what the person wants to continue using technology for safely.
